Grupo Fotones Plans €1.15 Billion, 140MW Data Center Campus in Murcia, Spain
Spanish renewable energy and infrastructure firm Grupo Fotones has announced plans to build a major data center campus in the southeastern region of Murcia, Spain, with a total investment of €1.15 billion. The project underscores the growing momentum of data center development in Southern Europe, driven by rising demand for cloud services and digital infrastructure.
The campus, which will deliver up to 140 megawatts (MW) of IT capacity, is expected to be one of the largest data center developments in the region. Grupo Fotones said the facility will be designed to support high-density computing workloads, including artificial intelligence and cloud computing applications, and will be powered by renewable energy sources as part of the company’s sustainability commitments.
The company highlighted that the location in Murcia offers strategic advantages, including access to robust energy infrastructure and fiber connectivity, as well as a favorable climate for energy-efficient cooling. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during both construction and operational phases, contributing to the local economy.
This announcement comes amid a broader surge in data center investment across Spain and the wider Mediterranean basin, as hyperscale operators and colocation providers seek to expand their footprint beyond traditional hubs in Northern Europe. Industry analysts note that Spain’s growing renewable energy capacity and competitive land costs are making it an increasingly attractive destination for large-scale data center projects.
