IREN Unveils First Australian Data Center Campus, a 800MW Mega-Site in South Australia

IREN, a global leader in digital infrastructure and energy-intensive computing, has announced its first data center campus in Australia, marking a significant expansion beyond its existing operations in North America. The massive project, located in South Australia, is expected to reach a total capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), positioning it as one of the largest data center developments in the Asia-Pacific region.

The announcement underscores the surging demand for hyperscale computing capacity driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and high-performance workloads. South Australia’s favorable energy landscape, including abundant renewable resources and grid interconnection capabilities, was a key factor in the site selection. IREN plans to leverage the region’s low-cost, low-carbon energy to power the campus, aligning with the company’s strategy of building energy-efficient digital infrastructure.

The 800MW campus will be developed in phases, with the first stage expected to deliver significant capacity within the next few years. The project is designed to support hyperscale tenants requiring large-scale, long-term power commitments. IREN’s move into Australia reflects a broader trend among major data center operators diversifying geographically to meet growing demand while mitigating concentration risk in traditional markets like Northern Virginia and Silicon Valley.

Industry analysts note that the South Australia campus could catalyze further investment in the region’s digital economy, attracting cloud providers and AI firms seeking sustainable, cost-effective compute resources. The project also aligns with Australian government initiatives to boost digital sovereignty and data center infrastructure. IREN’s expansion into Australia is expected to create hundreds of construction and operational jobs, while strengthening the country’s position in the global data center market.
