AWS Scales Up Investment Commitment for Mississippi Data Centers to $25bn
April 10, 2026
Amazon Web Services has dramatically increased its planned investment in Mississippi's data center infrastructure to $25 billion, more than doubling its $10 billion commitment from just two years ago. This massive capital infusion underscores the intensifying race among cloud giants to secure and expand critical computing capacity, particularly in regions offering strategic advantages for energy and development.
The expanded plan consolidates and scales previously announced projects across three counties. In Warren County, a $3 billion campus in Vicksburg is slated for construction start this year, powered by Entergy Mississippi. The centerpiece is Project Atlas in Madison County, now budgeted at $11 billion, up from earlier reports of $10 billion. This project will span approximately 1,700 acres across two industrial parks, featuring multiple data center complexes and creating at least 1,000 jobs. Additionally, AWS is investing $1 billion to convert a former Delphi manufacturing plant in Hinds County into a data center, a project the company has now officially confirmed.
AWS stated that this statewide investment is expected to create around 2,000 high-skilled operational jobs. Currently, more than 75 local companies are engaged in the construction, employing thousands of workers. The initiative is closely tied to significant energy infrastructure upgrades. AWS is collaborating with Entergy Mississippi on the $300 million Superpower Mississippi Initiative to modernize the state grid, aiming for a 50 percent improvement in reliability and reduction in outages. Furthermore, AWS has invested in five renewable energy projects in Mississippi, totaling 616MW of new solar and wind capacity, with Amazon reporting $2.3 billion invested in these carbon-free energy sources.
Governor Tate Reeves hailed the investment as transformational. “Amazon isn’t just reinvesting in Mississippi—the company is once again betting on our people. $25 billion in two years is providing Mississippians with high-tech, high-paying opportunities, strengthening our communities, and showing the world that our state is open for business,” he said. David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, added, “We’re covering all our energy expenses, increasing our investment in Madison County, expanding into Warren County, and transforming a former manufacturing plant in Hinds County—producing reliable infrastructure that will serve Mississippi for generations.”
The Mississippi expansion is part of a broader global spending surge by AWS. In 2026 alone, the company plans to invest approximately $200 billion to expand its data center footprint, following the addition of 3.9GW of power capacity in 2025. Recent commitments include $12 billion for its first campuses in Louisiana and an additional $21 billion for the Aragon region in Spain. These moves highlight the immense capital requirements and strategic scaling necessary to support growing demand for cloud and AI services worldwide.
