Winda Energy Ventures into Data Centers with €500 Million, 100MW Facility in Finland
April 9, 2026
In a strategic move that underscores the deepening convergence of renewable energy and digital infrastructure, Finnish renewable energy developer Winda Energy has announced its inaugural foray into the data center market. The company revealed plans this week to construct a major 100-megawatt (MW) data center campus in Finland, signaling a significant diversification for a firm traditionally focused on wind and solar power generation.
The project will be situated on a 22-hectare plot within the MORE-Rastikangas industrial zone in the municipality of Janakkala, located in Southern Finland. With a total planned area of up to 112,110 square meters (1.1 million square feet), the development represents a substantial infrastructure commitment. Winda Energy aims to invest approximately €500 million (around $584 million) in the facility, which is being developed in partnership with Gi21 Capital, a European investment firm specializing in data center infrastructure.
Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027, with the first phase of the data center campus targeted for completion in 2028. The initiative leverages Winda's established footprint in green energy, which includes over 1 gigawatt of wind farms and more than 800 megawatts of solar projects in operation or development across Finland. Tuomas Hooli, CEO of Winda Energy, highlighted the strategic logic behind the expansion: "Finland and Winda Energy have already invested heavily in green electricity production, and it is great to see how this opens up new business opportunities on the consumption side."
The project has been welcomed by local authorities, who see it as a major economic driver. Harri Vierikka, Technical Director for Janakkala, stated, "The project is extremely significant for the municipality and positive in its overall impacts. It strengthens the municipality’s vitality, supports the area’s development, and demonstrates that the municipality is seen as a credible location and investment environment."
From an industry perspective, Winda's entry into data centers reflects a broader trend where energy producers seek to capture value from the power-intensive digital economy directly. By developing its own data center, Winda can potentially utilize its renewable energy assets more efficiently and offer low-carbon computing solutions. The partnership with Gi21 Capital provides the necessary specialized expertise and capital for this new venture. The move also reinforces Finland's attractiveness as a data center hub, benefiting from a cool climate, political stability, and a robust renewable energy grid.
