Digital Edge Acquires Strategic Land in Johor for Data Center Expansion
April 9, 2026

In a significant move to expand its footprint in a key Southeast Asian market, data center operator Digital Edge has acquired a substantial plot of land in Johor, Malaysia. The transaction underscores the continued growth of Johor as a critical data center hub, particularly for operators seeking proximity to the high-demand Singapore market.

The company entered into a sale and purchase agreement this month to acquire approximately 50 acres (49.7 acres) of land within the Bandar Cemerlang Industrial Park (BCIP) in Kota Tinggi. The seller is Crescendo Development Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the publicly listed Malaysian property developer Crescendo Corporation. The land was sold for RM346 million, equivalent to roughly $87 million, with the deal expected to be finalized in the second half of 2027.

While full development plans are not yet public, the site is slated for transformation into a data center campus. Digital Edge, which was formed in August 2020 by New York-based private equity firm Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners, has not provided immediate comment on its specific intentions for the newly acquired land. The operator currently has a portfolio of around 25 data centers either operational or under construction across the Asia-Pacific region, with a secured IT power capacity exceeding 1.1 gigawatts spanning markets like Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

For Crescendo Corporation, this sale continues a pattern of capitalizing on the data center boom in Johor. Since its founding in 1989, the developer has sold land in the state to several major industry players, including STT GDC, Edgnex (backed by Damac), Digital Halo, Microsoft, Megaspeed, and Yu Ao Sdn Bhd.

The acquisition highlights the strategic importance of Johor, located just across the border from Singapore. While Singapore has begun to cautiously ease its moratorium on new data center construction, Johor has solidified its position as a major beneficiary of the overflow demand, cultivating a sizable and competitive market.

The region now hosts facilities from a range of global and regional operators such as PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, Bridge DC, and Vantage. Digital Edge's latest land purchase positions it to significantly scale its infrastructure in this strategically vital corridor.
