NTT Expands Japan Footprint with New 30MW AI-Ready Data Center in Kyoto

April 9, 2026

NTT Global Data Centers has officially inaugurated its Keihanna OSK11 facility in Kyoto, Japan, marking a strategic expansion to meet the surging demand for high-capacity, AI-optimized infrastructure in the Kansai region. The launch underscores the intensifying competition among global operators to secure a presence in key Asian markets where digital transformation and artificial intelligence workloads are driving unprecedented demand for reliable power and scale.

The four-story, air-cooled data center, located in Seika Town, Kyoto Prefecture, commenced operations this week. First announced in 2022, the OSK11 facility represents NTT's 14th data center in Japan and adds approximately 30 megawatts of IT capacity across a floor space of 10,900 square meters (117,325 square feet). The facility is operated by NTT Global Data Centers, the data center division of NTT Ltd.

Doug Adams, CEO of NTT Global Data Centers, emphasized the facility's role in supporting regional digital growth. "OSK11 represents a significant milestone in our continued investment in Japan and our commitment to enabling the next generation of digital innovation," Adams stated. "As demand for AI-ready infrastructure accelerates, the Kansai region is emerging as a critical hub for data-driven growth, and OSK11 positions our customers to scale with confidence."

The new build expands NTT's formidable global footprint, which now encompasses over 2 gigawatts of capacity across roughly 160 data centers in 20 markets worldwide, including major hubs in the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The Kyoto opening is part of a broader development wave for NTT in Japan, where it currently has three sites under active development. This includes the 36MW Osaka OSK12 campus, where construction on the first of two 18MW buildings began last year. Furthermore, the company broke ground on a 24MW building in Tokyo in April 2025 and has acquired land in Tochigi and Osaka for future projects, signaling a sustained multi-billion dollar investment in the country's digital backbone.

Industry analysts view this expansion as a direct response to the infrastructure needs of hyperscalers and enterprises deploying increasingly dense AI compute clusters. By establishing a major node in Kyoto, within the Keihanna Science City, NTT is not only catering to local demand but also strengthening Japan's position as a leading data center market in Asia. The development is expected to stimulate economic activity in the Kansai region and provide a critical platform for innovation in fields ranging from scientific research to fintech.
