Equinix Launches AI-Optimized HK6 Data Center in Hong Kong with $124 Million Investment

Global digital infrastructure leader Equinix has officially opened its sixth International Business Exchange data center in Hong Kong, a facility purpose-built to handle the intense computational demands of artificial intelligence workloads. The launch underscores the growing strategic importance of Hong Kong as a regional AI hub and reflects a broader industry push to deploy infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation AI applications.

Equinix invested an initial US$124 million in the new facility, known as HK6, which is equipped with advanced liquid-cooling technology to manage the heat generated by high-density AI compute systems. During its first phase of operation, HK6 will house 1,000 cabinets, with plans to scale up to 3,550 cabinets at full build-out. The data center has been engineered to meet the specific power, thermal, and operational requirements necessary to host AI innovations, positioning it as a critical asset for enterprises seeking to deploy AI at scale in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Hong Kong stands at the forefront of Asia-Pacific’s digital future, and the launch of HK6 marks another significant step in our strategy to build the infrastructure that will power the AI era,” said Cyrus Adaggra, President of Equinix in Asia-Pacific, in a press release. “Built upon Equinix’s foundational global best practices, this state-of-the-art facility expands upon the capacity, resilience and connectivity our customers need to innovate with confidence and unlock new growth opportunities.”

The opening of HK6 aligns closely with the Hong Kong government’s broader push to advance its technology and AI agenda, particularly through the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP). HK6 will be directly connected to HSITP, enabling co-development and accelerating research and development across the Greater Bay Area. The HSITP facility received a capital injection of HK$10 billion in February to accelerate development of the Hetao Hong Kong Park, signaling strong government commitment to building a world-class innovation ecosystem.

Through HK6, organizations will be able to leverage Equinix’s AI Discovery Hub to build, test, validate, and ultimately scale their AI applications in a hybrid, multicloud environment. This capability is expected to lower barriers for enterprises looking to experiment with and deploy AI workloads, particularly those requiring low-latency connectivity and robust data sovereignty compliance.

“We are pleased to see the launch of Equinix’s HK6 data center in Hong Kong, adding momentum to the city’s digital infrastructure,” said Vincent Ma, Chief Executive Officer of HSITP, in a statement. “Equinix’s focus on enhancing regional interconnection and AI computing capacity aligns with our objective to support I&T enterprises in the Greater Bay Area, research teams and start-ups with secure connectivity, and to expedite R&D progress.”

HK6 joins a dense Equinix ecosystem in Hong Kong, located in Tsuen Wan alongside Equinix’s HK1, HK2, and HK3 data centers. Together, these facilities enable mission-critical workloads and hybrid multicloud architectures with high-speed, low-latency connectivity. The campus is designed to meet the growing demand for AI-driven applications while also complying with strict data sovereignty requirements, a key consideration for multinational enterprises operating in the region.

Importantly, HK6 was developed with sustainability as a core design principle. The facility runs on 100 percent renewable energy and is aligned with the Hong Kong government’s Climate Action Plan 2050, which targets carbon neutrality by mid-century. This commitment to green operations positions HK6 not only as a high-performance AI data center but also as a model for sustainable digital infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
