Reliance and Meta Partner to Build 168-MW AI Data Center in Gujarat

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms to develop a 168-megawatt, AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant expansion of India’s artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity. The facility, which is expected to become operational within the next two years, will provide dedicated AI computing capacity for Meta under a lease arrangement. This project represents Meta’s first built-to-suit data center in India and is designed to support the company’s growing AI workloads.

The collaboration underscores India’s emergence as a global hub for AI infrastructure, with the companies describing the initiative as a major milestone in a joint statement. Under the agreement, Reliance will deliver end-to-end services across the data center’s lifecycle, including design, construction, utility management, renewable energy supply, network connectivity, and fully managed operations. The Jamnagar site was chosen for its strategic advantages, including access to renewable energy resources, water availability, proximity to India’s western submarine cable landing stations, and connectivity through Jio’s extensive fiber network.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, said: “This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution.” The announcement aligns with Reliance’s broader AI ambitions, as the conglomerate has committed to investing approximately USD 110 billion over the next seven years to develop AI-related infrastructure and accelerate India’s transition into what Ambani has described as the “intelligence era.”

Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Meta, added: “We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.” The project will leverage Jio’s fiber network and connectivity infrastructure, highlighting the growing convergence of telecommunications, data center services, and AI computing in India. The development comes as technology companies worldwide continue to expand AI-ready digital infrastructure to support increasing demand for generative AI and machine learning applications, positioning the Jamnagar facility as a critical asset in Meta’s global AI strategy.
