Hyperco Files for Second Data Center in Kouvola, Expanding Finnish Campus to 100MW

Nordic data center operator Hyperco is moving forward with plans to expand its footprint in Finland, filing a permit application to build a second data center in the city of Kouvola. The move underscores the growing demand for digital infrastructure in the Nordic region, driven by energy availability and favorable climate conditions.

According to local Finnish media outlets including Yle and Kouvolan Sanomat, Hyperco submitted the application earlier this month for a two-story data center in the Koria district of Kouvola. The facility is designed to reach a total capacity of 100MW across approximately 56,670 square meters (609,990 square feet). The Kouvola Technical Committee is scheduled to review the permit application on Tuesday, June 16.

To accelerate the timeline, Hyperco has requested permission to begin foundation work before the building permit officially takes effect, citing the urgency of completing ground preparation before winter freezing conditions set in. This pragmatic approach reflects the company’s focus on maintaining construction momentum in Finland’s challenging climate.

The new facility will be built on a plot adjacent to Hyperco’s first data center in Koria, where construction began last year. That single-story facility, developed in partnership with DayOne, is slated to serve TikTok and is expected to be completed by May 2027. The proximity of the two buildings suggests a broader campus strategy aimed at scaling capacity efficiently.

Kouvola, located about 135 kilometers (83 miles) northeast of Helsinki, is the administrative capital of the Kymenlaakso region and has emerged as a strategic location for data center development due to its access to renewable energy and cool Nordic climate.

Hyperco was founded in 2020 and was acquired in April 2025 by Edgnex, the data center arm of Dubai-based real estate firm Damac. The company’s portfolio includes a data center acquired in 2022 from Finnish family office TS-Yhtymä for more than €35 million ($36.4 million). That 16,900-square-meter (181,900-square-foot) facility in Vantaa hosts two long-term tenants: Equinix and Thales.

Beyond Kouvola, Hyperco has projects in development across Espoo, Pyhäjoki, and Lohja, and is also linked to a potential site in the Voikkaa industrial area in Kouvola. The expansion reflects a broader trend of data center operators investing in the Nordics to meet surging demand from cloud providers and social media platforms, while leveraging the region’s low-cost renewable energy and natural cooling advantages.
