German Chemical Giant Wacker Enters Data Center Cooling Market with Silicon-Based Immersion Fluid

German chemicals firm Wacker Chemie is making a strategic push into the data center infrastructure sector with the launch of Helisol EC, a new silicon-based dielectric fluid designed for single-phase immersion cooling systems. The move marks a significant expansion for the century-old company, which has traditionally focused on industrial heat transfer fluids and silicon chemistry.

Wacker, founded in 1914 and headquartered in Germany, has developed Helisol EC as a variant of its existing Helisol product line, which is primarily used for industrial heat transfer applications. The new formulation is based on polydimethylsiloxanes, a class of linear siloxane compounds that the company says offers excellent thermal stability across a wide operating temperature range, from -100 to +100 degrees Celsius. This makes the fluid suitable for the demanding thermal management requirements of modern data centers, particularly those supporting high-density AI and HPC workloads.

The launch comes at a time when the immersion cooling market is seeking alternatives to traditional dielectric fluids based on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS-based fluids have been widely used in immersion environments due to their dielectric properties, but they have come under increasing regulatory and environmental scrutiny because of their persistence in the environment and links to cancer. Wacker is positioning its silicon-based fluid as a less harmful alternative, capitalizing on the industry-wide shift away from PFAS compounds. The company emphasizes that its Helisol fluids are manufactured at its production site in Burghausen, Germany, ensuring a controlled and reliable supply chain for data center operators.

Wacker Chemie, which is still controlled by the Wacker family, operates more than 25 production sites across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Beyond cooling fluids, the company produces a wide range of silicon-based products, including silicone rubbers, polymer products like ethylene vinyl acetate redispersible polymer powder, chemical materials, and polysilicon and wafers for the semiconductor industry. The entry into the data center cooling market represents a natural extension of its expertise in silicon chemistry and high-performance materials, and it signals the growing convergence between the chemical industry and the digital infrastructure sector. As data centers increasingly adopt liquid cooling to manage rising power densities, the demand for specialized, environmentally safer dielectric fluids is expected to grow, creating a new revenue stream for established chemical manufacturers like Wacker.
