Spain’s University of Zaragoza Plans €1.5 Million Dual Data Center Expansion
The University of Zaragoza is set to significantly upgrade its digital backbone with the construction of two new data centers, marking a strategic investment in the institution’s technological resilience. The project, valued at approximately €1.5 million ($1.7 million), is fully funded by the Government of Aragon through a formal contract signed with the university, underscoring the regional government’s commitment to modernizing higher education infrastructure.
The initiative involves the development of a primary data center on the Campus San Francisco and a secondary backup facility on the Río Ebro Campus, both located in Zaragoza. This dual-site architecture is designed to enhance operational continuity and disaster recovery capabilities, ensuring that critical digital services remain available even in the event of a disruption at the main site. Both facilities are scheduled to become operational in 2027.
Beyond simply adding capacity, the new infrastructure will replace and expand the university’s existing systems, allowing it to house a greater volume of computer equipment and improve overall processing and storage power. The design explicitly includes a production center and a separate data center dedicated to disaster recovery, a move that reflects growing expectations for institutional data protection and service reliability in the academic sector.
For the University of Zaragoza, this investment is not just about hardware; it is about ensuring the continuity of digital services that underpin research, administration, and education. By distributing its infrastructure across two geographically distinct campuses, the university is adopting a best-practice approach to risk management, a trend increasingly seen across European universities as they digitize core operations.
