Spanish ISP Sarenet Opens €20 Million Data Center in Bizkaia to Boost Cloud and AI Services
Spanish internet service provider Sarenet has officially inaugurated a new data center at the Derio Communications Hub in Bizkaia, marking a significant expansion of its digital infrastructure in the Basque Country. The facility, located just outside Bilbao, represents a €20 million ($22.6 million) investment aimed at strengthening the company’s cloud, cybersecurity, and business continuity offerings.
The new data center spans 1,000 square meters (10,765 square feet) and delivers 3MW of critical capacity, with the ability to host up to 340 racks. In a move toward sustainability, the site includes an on-site solar deployment, aligning with broader industry trends toward renewable energy integration in data center operations. Sarenet said the facility will play a key role in bolstering the Basque Country’s position as a strategic hub for the digital economy in Europe.
The launch comes as Sarenet continues to expand its footprint across Spain. The company now operates three data centers in Madrid, two in Barcelona (including one within the BitNAP facility recently sold by Cellnex to Templus), one in Valencia, and two others in Bilbao within the same technology park. This latest addition underscores the growing demand for localized, high-capacity data center infrastructure to support cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads, and cybersecurity services.
Industry observers note that Sarenet’s investment reflects a broader trend among regional ISPs and telecom operators to upgrade their data center assets in response to rising enterprise demand for secure, low-latency digital services. By expanding capacity in the Basque Country, Sarenet is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the cloud and AI services market, while also enhancing disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities for local businesses.
