Microsoft’s First Data Center at Wisconsin Campus Goes Live, Marking a Major AI Milestone
Microsoft has officially brought its first data center online at its sprawling campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, just over two years after announcing the project. The company confirmed on June 23 that construction on the facility, part of a multi-building AI cluster known as “Fairwater,” is fully complete. The milestone was first hinted at by CEO Satya Nadella in April 2026, when he posted on social media that the site was coming online ahead of schedule, though it remained unclear at the time whether the facility was fully operational or approaching that stage.
The Mount Pleasant campus has been in development for several years, with Microsoft originally taking over land that was slated for a Foxconn manufacturing facility. The cloud giant broke ground at 90th Street in 2023, initially planning to develop 315 acres with three large buildings totaling 1.2 million square feet (111,485 square meters). The scale of construction was immense: it required 46.6 miles (74.9 km) of deep foundation piles, 26.5 million pounds of structural steel, 120 miles (193 km) of medium-voltage underground cable, and 72.6 miles (116.8 km) of mechanical piping.
Microsoft’s ambitions in the region have expanded rapidly. Later in 2023, the company gained approval for an additional 1,000-acre expansion and has since been aggressively acquiring land, including a 160-acre parcel purchased for $43 million in August last year. In January 2026, Microsoft received approval for 15 more data center buildings on the campus. The company estimates that between 2024 and 2028, it will have invested $4.7 billion locally on hyperscale construction in the state.
“With our Fairwater data center now fully operational, Wisconsin is now home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft. “This campus will help power the next generation of AI innovation globally and provide long-term economic opportunity locally through hundreds of highly skilled jobs and continued investment in the region.” David DeGroot, Village President of Mount Pleasant, added: “This is a historic milestone for Mount Pleasant and all of Racine County as we become home to one of the most advanced technology campuses in the world. Microsoft’s decision to invest here elevates our community into a destination for innovation and advancement.”
The operational data center marks a significant step in Microsoft’s broader strategy to build out AI infrastructure across the United States. Mount Pleasant, located in Racine County about 30 miles south of Milwaukee and 60 miles north of Chicago, is now a key node in that network. Construction on a second facility at the campus is already underway and is expected to be completed by 2028. Microsoft also launched a Fairwater site in Atlanta, Georgia, in November 2025, signaling that the Fairwater design is becoming a template for its next-generation AI data centers.
