EdgeMode Plans 300MW Natural Gas-Powered AI Data Center Campus in Toledo, Spain
Data center firm EdgeMode is expanding its footprint in Spain with plans to develop a 300MW natural gas-powered campus in the town of Mora, Toledo. The project, dubbed the Malpica AI campus, is designed to support high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads, and represents one of the largest digital infrastructure initiatives announced in the country by installed capacity.
EdgeMode is partnering with hydrogen fuel cell developer Bloom Energy to power the facility using 30 10MW fuel cell modules running on natural gas. This behind-the-meter generation model allows the campus to bypass reliance on the conventional power grid, significantly reducing deployment time. According to the developers, the autonomous system could enable the facility to become operational within 18 to 24 months from the start of construction—a critical advantage given the grid capacity constraints currently facing large data center projects across Europe.
The initiative calls for an investment of €3 billion ($3.42 billion). During the construction phase, the project is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs. Once operational, it will provide nearly 1,000 permanent positions, including engineers, technicians, security personnel, and administrative staff. The mayor of Mora, Emilio Bravo, described the project as “a turning point that could change the history of Mora and Castilla-La Mancha.”
Currently in a preliminary phase, the project was formalized through the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a presentation ceremony this month. The investment must still navigate administrative, financing, and implementation processes. According to EdgeMode CEO Charlie Faulkner, Mora was selected due to its proximity to Madrid and the company’s strong relationship with local authorities.
EdgeMode is actively building an AI data center platform in Spain as part of a joint venture with Blackberry Alternative Investment Fund (BAIF). In December, the company announced it had secured 1.5GW of firm power for the platform, which includes a 120MW data center in Córdoba, Andalusia; 100MW facilities in Vianos and Alcaraz, Albacete; and a 100MW facility in Toledo. This month, EdgeMode said its total Spanish pipeline now exceeds 4.35GW of planned capacity across eight sites.
The use of on-site natural gas generation backed by fuel cell technology reflects a broader industry trend toward behind-the-meter energy solutions, as hyperscale and AI-focused developers seek faster time-to-market and greater control over power supply. Reports that EdgeMode was partnering with a major fuel cell provider surfaced earlier this year, signaling the company’s commitment to alternative power models for large-scale AI infrastructure.
