The rapid expansion of data centers, driven largely by the surge in artificial intelligence and cloud computing, is creating an unprecedented demand for power and infrastructure. In response, a new collaborative initiative backed by some of the world’s largest technology companies aims to turn this challenge into a catalyst for climate innovation. Environmental impact investment platform Elemental Impact, together with Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, has launched the Data Center Innovation Initiative (DCII) to invest in and test clean energy and materials technology startups, with the goal of deploying proven solutions across broader energy and industrial systems.

Elemental Impact described the launch as a response to a “once-in-a-generation opportunity,” noting that data centers are now among the largest drivers of infrastructure development. This growth is fueling a massive need for new power systems, advanced materials, and industrial infrastructure, which in turn creates a powerful market pull for emerging technologies. Under the DCII, Elemental will invest between $500,000 and $5 million in up to 10 technology startups through 2027. Beyond capital, the initiative will provide specialized expertise in financing, deployment strategies, and workforce development to help these startups navigate complex regulatory and operational landscapes and scale their projects more quickly.

Dawn Lippert, CEO and Founder of Elemental Impact, stated, “We see this historic buildout of data centers as a way to pull forward important innovations that we’ve been investing in for many years—across energy, materials, and water. By collaborating with Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, we can help accelerate how these entrepreneurs are deploying—commercializing technologies that reduce emissions and deliver more positive impact for communities, including affordable, reliable energy.” The four tech giants will play an active role by identifying priority technology areas, providing strategic input during the due diligence process, supporting project deployment, and sharing outcomes to accelerate adoption across the entire industry.

The initiative will focus on several critical technology areas, including energy storage, advanced electrical systems, industrial cooling solutions, and low-carbon materials. Each selected technology will be tested in real-world data center environments or demonstration sites. The ultimate aim, according to Elemental, is to scale these solutions to improve local energy availability and reliability, enable more efficient use of materials and land, and drive significant emissions reductions. Meta’s Vice President of Energy and Sustainability, Nat Sahlstrom, emphasized the unique role of data centers, saying, “Data centers are uniquely positioned to serve as catalysts for clean energy and sustainable building materials. What excites us about the DCII is the focus on advancing emerging technology projects, building on Meta’s commitment to designing, building and operating sustainable and innovative data centers.”

Microsoft’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Melanie Nakagawa, also highlighted the strategic importance of the effort, noting that “sustainable data center design represents one of the fastest-growing opportunities for new technology adoption today.” She explained that Microsoft joined the initiative to convene industry leaders and innovators in pursuit of promising technologies that can deliver reliable, clean power and sustainable materials while improving efficiency and resiliency in the communities where the company operates. In addition to the founding tech companies, the DCII includes philanthropic partners such as Breakthrough Energy Discovery, Builders Vision Philanthropy, Salesforce, and the Stolte Family Foundation, as well as legal partner Wilson Sonsini, underscoring the broad-based support for accelerating climate solutions through the data center sector.
