2G Energy Secures Multi-Year Deal to Supply Containerized Power Plants for North American Data Centers
German combined heat and power (CHP) systems manufacturer 2G Energy has secured a landmark multi-year contract to supply containerized power plants to an undisclosed data center operator in North America, signaling growing demand for flexible, off-grid power solutions in the rapidly expanding AI and cloud computing sector.
Deliveries are set to begin in the second half of this year, according to the company, with its North American subsidiary managing the rollout over several years. The order includes a “large number” of containerized units and covers on-site commissioning, making it the largest contract 2G has signed to date. While the identity of the customer remains confidential, the scale of the deal underscores the increasing reliance on modular power systems to meet the energy demands of hyperscale data centers.
“We are delighted about this important strategic step and the strong confidence placed in us by our customer,” said Pablo Hofelich, CEO of 2G Energy. “2G continues to pursue a systematic regional and product diversification strategy, to which our approach in the Data Center and AI segment is an ideal fit. With more than 10,000 installed units and our high plant availability, we will remain a sought‑after partner in this rapidly growing business field.”
2G’s containerized power solutions range from 50kW to 2.5MW and are designed to be fuel-agnostic, capable of running on biogas, natural gas, hydrogen, or propane. The units can be integrated into existing buildings or heating systems, or deployed independently in containers or engine rooms, offering data center operators significant flexibility in power sourcing and site design.
The company said it is currently in negotiations with additional data center clients and expects to secure orders in the low triple-digit megawatt range in the coming months. This pipeline reflects a broader industry trend toward containerized and off-grid prime power solutions, driven by the urgent need for rapid, scalable energy infrastructure to support AI workloads.
2G’s entry into the North American data center market mirrors moves by other major players. VoltaGrid, for instance, has signed a 2.3GW agreement with Oracle to power its AI data centers with containerized natural gas systems, and has also inked deals with Vantage for 1GW and with xAI. These developments highlight the growing role of modular, fuel-flexible power plants as a critical bridge between rising electricity demand and grid constraints.
Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Heek, Germany, 2G Energy develops, produces, and installs CHP systems, large heat pumps, and peak-load gensets. With over 10,000 systems installed globally, the company supplies both electrical and thermal energy across a wide range of applications, positioning itself as a key player in the data center power transition.
