Guofu, CEWA, and Hydro Data Partner to Pilot Hydrogen Power for Southeast Asian Data Centers
Chinese hydrogen developer Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy has entered a strategic partnership with Thai independent power producer Charoen Energy and Water Asia Company Limited (CEWA) and its affiliate Hydro Data to explore the deployment of hydrogen power generation systems at data centers across Thailand and Southeast Asia. The collaboration marks a significant step in integrating alternative energy sources into the region’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure.
Under the terms of the agreement, CEWA will identify and evaluate potential data center projects in Thailand and Southeast Asia, Hydro Data will develop customized technical solutions for each selected site, and Guofu will supply the necessary hydrogen power generation equipment. The partners will initially collaborate on a pilot project in Rayong, Thailand, with a capacity of 3 megawatts (MW).
Guofu, a manufacturer of hydrogen power systems and associated infrastructure, produces both Alkaline and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis systems, as well as hydrogen fuel cell systems for the mobility sector. This project is not Guofu’s first venture into the data center space. In March, the company signed a tripartite supply cooperation agreement with BTE and Hylium for a demonstration project combining hydrogen production with power generation equipment capable of supplying electricity to large-scale data centers.
Data center operators are increasingly exploring hydrogen as a potential future fuel source to meet sustainability goals and reduce reliance on traditional grid power. While most hydrogen-related deals in the industry remain at the demonstration or pilot stage, often tied to natural gas-powered hydrogen fuel cell systems, the market is gaining momentum. Bloom Energy, a manufacturer of solid oxide fuel cells, has emerged as a prominent player, signing deals with major operators such as Nebius, Oracle, and Equinix.
The partnership between Guofu, CEWA, and Hydro Data underscores the growing interest in hydrogen as a clean energy solution for the data center sector, particularly in Southeast Asia, where demand for digital services and data processing capacity is surging. If successful, the Rayong pilot could pave the way for broader adoption of hydrogen power across the region, offering a scalable path toward decarbonization for one of the most energy-intensive industries.
