DayOne and Firmus Partner to Build 360MW Data Centre Campus in Batam, Near Singapore
DayOne, a data centre developer backed by DigitalBridge, has announced a joint venture with Indonesia’s Firmus to develop a 360-megawatt data centre campus in Batam, Indonesia. The project, located just 20 kilometers from Singapore, underscores the growing demand for digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia as operators seek alternatives to land-constrained Singapore.
The campus will be built across a 10-hectare site in the Nongsa Digital Park, a special economic zone in Batam that offers tax incentives and streamlined regulatory approvals. According to the companies, the first phase of the development is expected to deliver 50MW of capacity by early 2028, with the full site build-out targeting completion by 2032. The facility will be designed to support high-density computing workloads, including artificial intelligence and cloud services.
“Batam’s proximity to Singapore, combined with its competitive energy costs and government support for digital infrastructure, makes it an ideal location for this development,” said a spokesperson for DayOne. The partnership leverages Firmus’s local expertise in land acquisition and permitting, while DayOne brings its experience in designing and operating large-scale data centres.
The project reflects a broader trend of data centre expansion into secondary markets across Southeast Asia. Singapore has imposed a moratorium on new data centre builds since 2019 due to energy and land constraints, pushing developers to adjacent regions such as Johor in Malaysia and Batam in Indonesia. Industry analysts note that the Batam campus could help alleviate capacity pressures in the region, particularly for hyperscale cloud providers and enterprises seeking low-latency connectivity to Singapore.
Financing details for the project were not disclosed, but the companies indicated that the development would be funded through a combination of equity from the joint venture partners and debt financing. The campus is expected to create hundreds of construction and operational jobs in Batam, contributing to the local economy.
