Amazon Signs 600MW Offshore Wind PPA with Skyborn Renewables in Germany, Largest Deal of Its Kind in the Country
Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Skyborn Renewables for 600 megawatts of capacity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking the largest corporate PPA ever secured in the German market. The agreement is tied to the 976.5MW Gennaker project, which is expected to begin delivering power by the end of 2028 upon commissioning.
The deal underscores the growing importance of large-scale renewable energy procurement for hyperscale data center operators. According to Skyborn, the PPA will enable the developer to move forward with construction of the wind farm, which will consist of 63 turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW. The project received its construction permit in late 2025, and physical construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2026. Total project costs are estimated at approximately €3 billion ($3.43 billion).
“By signing our largest power purchase agreement in Germany, we're giving Skyborn the certainty to move forward with Gennaker, bringing nearly 1GW of new offshore wind capacity onto the grid, strengthening Germany's energy security, and supporting jobs and investment in the region,” said Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer of Skyborn Renewables, added: “This agreement with Amazon marks a defining milestone for Gennaker and Skyborn. As our blueprint project, Gennaker demonstrates how large-scale offshore wind can be delivered in a reliable, scalable way. It also reflects the growing need to connect renewable electricity generation with robust and forward-looking infrastructure that enables a resilient energy system.”
The PPA builds on Amazon’s already sizable energy offtake portfolio in Germany. The company has now contracted more than 1.3GW of power across 12 projects in the country. This includes a recent 110MW offshore wind PPA with RWE for capacity from the 900MW Nordseecluster B project in the eastern German North Sea, as well as a 100MW PPA signed with Ørsted in December 2021 for capacity from the 900MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm.
Amazon Web Services’ primary cloud region in Germany is located in Frankfurt, where it has operated since 2014. In 2024, the company announced it would invest €8.8 billion ($9.44 billion) in its AWS Europe (Frankfurt) cloud region by 2026. Beyond Frankfurt, AWS is also developing data center sites in Schöneck and Maintal in the Hesse region, with plans to invest “more than €1 billion” in the Schöneck facility alone.
Skyborn Renewables, headquartered in Hamburg, is a global offshore wind developer and a portfolio company of BlackRock-owned Global Infrastructure Partners. Founded in 2000, the firm currently has around 750MW of operational capacity and a development pipeline exceeding 20GW across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas.
