Prometheus Hyperscale Wins Approval for Gigawatt-Scale Data Center Campus in Wyoming

Prometheus Hyperscale, a US data center developer, has secured planning approval for a massive data center campus in Uinta County, Wyoming, marking a major milestone for a project first announced six years ago. The company received a unanimous conditional use permit from the Uinta County Board of Commissioners for the flagship facility near Evanston, clearing the way for one of the largest planned data center developments in the region.

The 506-acre site is initially designed to deliver 1.25 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, with the potential to scale up to 5 GW as demand grows. Construction is expected to begin within six months of final permitting, and the full 1.25 GW campus will be built out in phases over 48 to 60 months. This scale underscores the growing demand for hyperscale infrastructure driven by AI and cloud computing workloads.

“This unanimous approval reflects the strength of the project’s fundamentals and the depth of community engagement we’ve built in Uinta County,” said Trevor Neilson, president of Prometheus Hyperscale. The company, originally launched around 2020 under the name Wyoming Hyperscale Whitebox and relaunched in September 2024, initially planned a 120 MW campus on the same site before significantly expanding its ambitions. The Uinta County Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended approval last month following a heavily attended public meeting.

A key feature of the Evanston campus is its operation as a fully islanded microgrid, generating power on-site through natural gas engines and turbines. By not connecting to the public utility grid, the company aims to eliminate “interconnection queue exposure and ratepayer impact as regulatory risk factors,” according to a statement. This approach reflects a broader industry trend toward energy independence, as data center operators seek to bypass grid constraints and accelerate deployment timelines.

Prometheus Hyperscale is also developing the 1.25 GW Falls Ranch project near Casper, Wyoming, in partnership with Casper Carbon Capture, and a site in Dallas, Texas, with Engie. The company has previously targeted additional campuses in Pueblo and Fort Morgan, Colorado, and Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, though the status of those projects remains unclear. Notably, In-Q-Tel (IQT), a venture firm funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has invested in Prometheus, signaling strategic interest in the company’s infrastructure capabilities.

The approval positions Prometheus to capitalize on the surging demand for large-scale data center capacity in the US, particularly in regions with available land and favorable regulatory environments. As hyperscale projects become increasingly complex, the ability to secure permits and develop off-grid power solutions could become a competitive advantage in the race to build next-generation digital infrastructure.
