Alibaba Cloud Opens Fifth Data Center in Tokyo, Expanding AI Infrastructure in Japan

Alibaba Cloud has launched its fifth data center in Japan, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion strategy. The new facility, located in Tokyo, comes just months after the company introduced a fourth availability zone in the region in March 2026, and builds on Alibaba’s initial entry into the Japanese market with the launch of its Tokyo region in 2016.

The latest data center is designed to meet growing demand from Japanese enterprises in key sectors including retail, gaming, entertainment, and manufacturing. According to Alibaba Cloud, the expansion reflects the company’s commitment to providing robust, scalable infrastructure as businesses across Japan accelerate their adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud-native technologies.

Takeshi Kurita, general manager of Japan and South Korea at Alibaba Cloud, said the launch represents a significant milestone for the company’s digital ambitions in the country. “We are seeing unprecedented demand from Japanese enterprises who are eager to leverage agentic AI to drive innovation and efficiency,” Kurita noted. “By providing robust, secure, and scalable infrastructure alongside cutting-edge AI solutions, we are hoping to support Japanese developers and businesses to not just adopt AI, but to lead in the agentic AI era.” The new facility also offers local access to Alibaba’s Model Studio and latest AI models, further strengthening the company’s value proposition in the region.

This data center launch is part of a broader wave of expansion for Alibaba Cloud. Earlier this week, the company announced a new cloud region in France, based on two data centers in Paris. Earlier in April, Alibaba added a new two-availability-zone region in Johor, Malaysia — its second facility in the country. These moves are aligned with a major global infrastructure initiative that Alibaba has been pursuing over the past year. In June 2025, CEO Eddie Wu confirmed plans to invest approximately $52.7 billion in establishing a unified global cloud network, with the company later considering increasing that figure to $69 billion.

The expansion into Japan and other key markets underscores the intensifying competition among global cloud providers to capture demand from enterprises seeking AI-ready infrastructure. As Japanese companies increasingly turn to agentic AI to transform their operations, Alibaba Cloud’s growing local footprint positions it to compete directly with other hyperscale providers in the region.
