Data Center Proposed Next to Public School in Katoomba, Australia, Backed by AUD 4.8M Investment

A proposed data center development in the Blue Mountains region of southeastern Australia is drawing attention for its unconventional location and modest investment scale. The facility, planned for the town of Katoomba in New South Wales, would be situated next to a public school, raising questions about community integration and land use in regional data infrastructure projects.

According to planning documents submitted to the local council, the project involves the construction of a 3,118-square-meter data center with a total investment of AUD 4.8 million (approximately USD 3.2 million). The proposed site is adjacent to a public school, a location that has prompted discussions among local residents and planning authorities regarding noise, electromagnetic emissions, and visual impact on the educational environment.

The project is being spearheaded by a local developer, with the aim of providing data storage and processing capacity to support growing digital demand in the Blue Mountains region. While the investment is relatively small compared to hyperscale facilities, the development reflects a broader trend of edge data centers emerging in suburban and semi-rural areas to reduce latency and support local connectivity needs.

The proposal is still in its early stages, with environmental and community impact assessments expected to be conducted before any final approval. If built, the facility would serve as a critical piece of digital infrastructure for the region, which has historically relied on data services from Sydney, approximately 100 kilometers east. The location next to a school, however, has added a layer of complexity to the planning process, as officials weigh the economic benefits against potential disruptions to the school’s operations.

Industry observers note that such projects highlight the increasing tension between the need for localized data infrastructure and the challenges of siting facilities in densely populated or sensitive areas. The Katoomba proposal could serve as a test case for how regional data centers navigate community relations and regulatory hurdles in Australia.
