Green Horizon Secures Approval for 36MW Norway Data Center with €300M Investment

Green Horizon has received regulatory approval to build a 36MW data center in Stavanger, Norway, backed by a total investment of €300 million. The project marks a significant step in the company’s expansion into the Nordic region, which has become a prime destination for energy-intensive data infrastructure due to its abundant renewable energy and cool climate.

The planned facility will be located in the Forus area of Stavanger, a key industrial hub on Norway’s southwestern coast. Green Horizon aims to leverage the region’s stable grid and access to hydropower to operate the data center with a low carbon footprint. The company has secured the necessary permits from local authorities and expects to break ground later this year, with commercial operations targeted to begin in 2028.

The €300 million investment covers land acquisition, construction, and advanced cooling and power distribution systems. Once operational, the 36MW facility will support high-performance computing and cloud workloads, catering to enterprise clients seeking sustainable colocation options. Industry analysts note that the project reflects a broader trend of hyperscale and edge data center development in Norway, where electricity costs remain competitive and renewable energy penetration exceeds 98%.

Green Horizon’s CEO emphasized that the Stavanger site will be among the most energy-efficient in the company’s portfolio, incorporating heat reuse systems that can channel waste heat into the local district heating network. This aligns with Norway’s national strategy to reduce industrial energy waste and support circular economy initiatives. The project is also expected to create around 200 construction jobs and 40 permanent operational roles, contributing to the local economy.

The approval comes at a time when European data center demand continues to surge, driven by AI adoption and digital transformation across industries. With its combination of green energy, political stability, and favorable cooling conditions, Norway is increasingly attracting international data center investments. Green Horizon’s Stavanger facility is poised to strengthen the country’s position as a sustainable data hub in Northern Europe.
