RangeIDC to Invest $5 Billion in AI Data Center on Indonesia’s Batam Island
RangeIDC, a Chinese data center developer, has announced plans to invest $5 billion in building a massive artificial intelligence-focused data center on Indonesia’s Batam Island. The project underscores the growing demand for AI infrastructure in Southeast Asia and highlights the region’s increasing appeal as a hub for large-scale digital investments.
The facility, which will be developed in phases, is designed to support high-density AI workloads and will be equipped with advanced cooling and power systems to handle the intense computational requirements of modern AI models. Batam, located just south of Singapore, offers strategic advantages including proximity to major undersea cable landing stations and access to renewable energy sources, making it an attractive location for energy-intensive data centers.
This investment comes as global tech giants and cloud providers race to expand their AI capacity. RangeIDC’s project is expected to create thousands of local jobs during construction and operation, while also bolstering Indonesia’s position in the regional data center market. The company has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for the first phase of construction, but industry observers note that the scale of the investment signals a long-term commitment to the region.
