Eagle Rock Proposes $8.8 Billion, 1GW Data Center Campus in Illinois
Property developer Eagle Rock has unveiled plans to build a massive data center campus in Christian County, Illinois, with a total investment of $8.8 billion and a power capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW). The proposal marks one of the largest single-site data center developments in the Midwest, reflecting the surging demand for large-scale computing infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The proposed campus, to be located in a rural area of central Illinois, would span multiple phases and is designed to accommodate hyperscale tenants. According to Eagle Rock, the development could create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions once operational. The company has already initiated discussions with local officials and utility providers to secure power and land rights for the project.
Data center capacity at the 1GW scale is typically reserved for the largest cloud providers and AI firms, which require immense energy and cooling resources. Illinois has become an increasingly attractive market for such developments due to its access to fiber optic networks, relatively low energy costs, and available land. However, the project will likely face scrutiny over power grid capacity and environmental impact, as a facility of this size could consume enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes.
Eagle Rock's proposal underscores a broader trend of property developers and investment firms entering the data center space, drawn by long-term demand from digital infrastructure needs. If approved, the campus could become one of the largest data center projects in the United States, positioning Christian County as a key hub for digital infrastructure in the Midwest.
