Arcem Acquires Land in Eastern Finland for 500MW Data Center Campus
Arcem, the Nordic data center platform backed by private investment group Bonum, has acquired a site in the municipality of Joroinen, eastern Finland, for a large-scale data center campus that could eventually reach 500MW of capacity. The acquisition signals the company’s continued expansion in the Nordics, a region increasingly favored by hyperscalers and colocation providers for its abundant renewable energy and cool climate.
The company announced this week that it had signed an agreement with the Joroinen municipal council following a unanimous resolution. The first phase of development is expected to deliver 60MW as early as 2027, scaling to 100MW before 2029. The total site, which includes neighboring plots secured for future expansion, spans approximately 800,000 square meters (8.61 million square feet).
The property is already zoned for data center use, and a building permit for the initial phase is anticipated as early as this summer. The site is located directly adjacent to Fingrid’s existing 400/110kV transformer station at Huutokoski, providing a direct pathway to grid connectivity. News of Arcem’s interest in Joroinen first surfaced last year.
“In Joroinen, we have established a clear path to grid connection and construction start through a structured process involving the municipality, the local grid operator and Fingrid,” said Anders Bakken Eriksen, CEO of Arcem. “The area is reachable in under three hours by car from Helsinki via a four-lane motorway, has a railway at the site and a local airport nearby. This makes it attractive to a broad range of tenants.” He added that in today’s market, time to market and scale are the two most critical factors, and that the Joroinen project delivers both.
Arcem is one of several data center developers actively expanding in Finland, with known projects also under development in Pyhäjärvi, Rautalampi, Kuhmo, Salo, and Oulu. In Norway, the company is pursuing developments in Bergen, Husnes, Elverum, and Moss. The broader Nordic platform, built over time by Bonum, positions Arcem to serve a wide range of tenants seeking rapid deployment and scalable capacity in the region.
The Joroinen project is part of a wider trend of increasing data center investment in Finland, driven by the country’s robust energy infrastructure, political stability, and favorable climate for cooling. As demand for cloud services and AI workloads continues to surge, locations like Joroinen — with direct grid access and available land — are becoming critical for meeting the needs of global technology companies.
