AirTrunk Signs $21 Billion Deal with Maharashtra for 3GW Data Center Campus
AirTrunk, a leading hyperscale data center platform, has signed a landmark agreement with the government of Maharashtra, India, to develop a massive 3-gigawatt data center campus in the state. The deal, valued at approximately $21 billion, represents one of the largest single data center investments ever announced in Asia and underscores India’s growing importance as a global digital infrastructure hub.
The agreement was formalized through a Letter of Intent (LoI) between AirTrunk and the Maharashtra government, marking a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to attract large-scale technology investments. The proposed campus will be built in phases and is expected to support the surging demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence workloads, and digital transformation initiatives across India and beyond.
According to the terms of the LoI, the project is anticipated to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operations, while also catalyzing the development of local supply chains and renewable energy infrastructure. The Maharashtra government has committed to facilitating necessary clearances, power supply, and land allocation to accelerate the project’s timeline.
Industry analysts note that the deal highlights a broader trend of hyperscale data center operators expanding aggressively into emerging markets, particularly India, where data consumption is skyrocketing due to widespread smartphone adoption, affordable data plans, and government-led digitization programs. The 3GW capacity of the planned campus is roughly equivalent to the power consumption of several million homes, reflecting the immense scale of modern data center demands.
The investment also aligns with India’s national ambitions to become a global data center and cloud computing hub, supported by policies such as the Data Centre Policy and incentives for electronics manufacturing. AirTrunk’s commitment further strengthens the competitive position of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and Pune, as a prime destination for hyperscale data center development in South Asia.
