Damac Digital Plans 6GW Data Center Expansion Across Four Continents
Damac Digital, the digital infrastructure arm of Dubai-based luxury developer Damac Group, has announced a massive global data center expansion plan totaling 6 gigawatts (GW) of capacity across four continents. The move marks one of the largest single capacity commitments by a Middle Eastern firm in the hyperscale data center sector, signaling a strategic pivot into the global digital infrastructure market.
The expansion will span North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with projects expected to break ground in key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf region. While the company has not disclosed a specific capital expenditure figure for the entire 6GW portfolio, industry analysts estimate the buildout could require investments exceeding $60 billion, given current construction and equipment costs for hyperscale facilities.
Damac Digital said the initiative is driven by surging demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads, and high-performance computing. The company noted that existing infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the exponential growth in data generation and processing needs. “The digital economy is expanding at an unprecedented rate, and we see a clear gap between supply and demand for large-scale, energy-efficient data centers,” a Damac Digital spokesperson said. “Our goal is to bridge that gap by delivering capacity where it is needed most, with a focus on sustainability and speed to market.”
The plan includes a mix of greenfield developments and partnerships with local energy providers to secure renewable power sources. Damac Digital emphasized that each facility will be designed to meet Tier III or Tier IV standards, with advanced cooling technologies and low carbon footprints. The company also intends to leverage its parent group’s experience in large-scale real estate development to accelerate project timelines.
Industry observers view this expansion as a significant shift in the global data center landscape, traditionally dominated by U.S. and European operators. By entering multiple regions simultaneously, Damac Digital is positioning itself as a credible competitor to established players such as Equinix, Digital Realty, and NTT. The move also reflects the growing influence of Middle Eastern capital in the global technology infrastructure sector, following similar investments by sovereign wealth funds and regional conglomerates.
The announcement comes amid a broader boom in data center construction worldwide, fueled by the rapid adoption of generative AI and edge computing. However, challenges remain, including supply chain constraints for critical equipment like transformers and backup generators, as well as regulatory hurdles related to land use and energy consumption. Damac Digital has indicated it is working with multiple governments and utility companies to address these issues proactively.
