EdgeConneX to Invest €3 Billion in Italian Data Center Expansion
EdgeConneX, a global data center provider backed by private equity firm EQT, has announced plans to invest approximately €3 billion in expanding its data center footprint across Italy. The massive investment underscores the growing demand for digital infrastructure in Southern Europe, driven by cloud adoption, artificial intelligence workloads, and the increasing need for localized data processing.
The company intends to develop multiple facilities in key Italian markets, including Milan and Rome, with construction expected to begin in phases over the next several years. EdgeConneX said the investment will support the deployment of high-density capacity tailored to hyperscale cloud providers and large enterprise customers. The initiative is part of the company’s broader European strategy to strengthen its presence in high-growth regions.
According to company officials, the plan aligns with Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which prioritizes digital transformation and sustainable infrastructure. EdgeConneX emphasized that the new facilities will be designed with energy efficiency in mind, incorporating advanced cooling technologies and renewable energy sources to meet sustainability targets. The company has already secured land and power capacity for several sites, with the first data center expected to come online by late 2027.
The investment reflects a broader trend in the European data center market, where capacity constraints in traditional hubs like Frankfurt and London are pushing operators to expand into secondary markets. Italy, in particular, has emerged as a strategic location due to its strong connectivity to the Mediterranean region and growing demand from both domestic and international clients. Industry analysts note that the €3 billion commitment could significantly accelerate Italy’s position as a digital hub, potentially attracting further investment from other infrastructure players.
