Edge Data Center Firm Armada Secures $230 Million in Series B Funding, Partners with Johnson Controls for New Manufacturing Hub

Armada, a provider of containerized edge data centers designed for harsh and remote environments, has raised $230 million in its latest funding round, marking the company’s largest capital raise to date. The Series B round was co-led by Overmatch, BlackRock, and 8090 Industries, with participation from new strategic investors including Johnson Controls, NightDragon, Mitsui, and Singtel Innov8. Existing backers such as Felicis, Marlinspike, Shield Capital, Lux Capital, Founders Fund, Silent Ventures, Veriten, and Gladebrook also contributed.

The funding underscores the growing demand for deployable AI infrastructure that can operate outside traditional data center environments. Armada’s modular units are equipped with CPUs, GPUs, and XPUs, and can be customized for use cases ranging from oil rigs to military operations. The company has previously launched smaller units called Beacons for oil rigs, alongside its larger Galleon pods. Backed by Microsoft, Armada has either deployed or is planning to deploy modules with clients including Nscale, UnityCloud, TampNet, Aramco, Newlab, Eclipse, the U.S. Navy, Aker BP, and Alaska's Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.

“The AI race will not be won by one-off projects,” said Dan Wright, co-founder and CEO of Armada. “It will be won by the companies and countries that can manufacture, deploy, and continuously improve AI infrastructure, with speed, scale, and sovereignty.”

As part of the announcement, Armada is opening a new production facility called Galleon Forge One in partnership with Johnson Controls. The facility is expected to span up to 400,000 square feet and create 500 jobs, enabling continuous production of Armada’s modular data centers. Production is slated to begin in the summer, starting with the Leviathan, the company’s megawatt-scale modular data center. “At Galleon Forge One, we will do what America does best: build the industrial base to win,” Wright added.

In conjunction with the manufacturing expansion, Armada and Johnson Controls have unveiled a Global Framework Agreement for modular data center systems. Johnson Controls, which provides data center solutions across more than 150 countries, launched a dedicated data center solutions business in 2024. The company also offers cooling products through its Silent-Aire unit and recently acquired Alloy Enterprises, a provider of cold plates for liquid cooling, as well as investing in two-phase direct-to-chip cooling firm Accelsius.

“Johnson Controls is working with Armada to rapidly deliver secure modular data centers at scale,” said Joakim Weidemanis, CEO of Johnson Controls. “Together, we have already deployed units across the United States and around the world, demonstrating the expertise and global reach required to support mission-critical environments. Johnson Controls' differentiated technology, U.S.-based manufacturing strength, and Armada's edge computing expertise will deliver the thermal-critical environments that perform predictably, deploy quickly, and scale with confidence.”

The partnership and funding round highlight the increasing convergence between traditional industrial manufacturing and edge computing, particularly as military, energy, and government clients seek sovereign and rapidly deployable AI infrastructure. With the new capital and manufacturing capacity, Armada is positioned to scale production and meet rising demand for edge-based compute in mission-critical environments.
