Digital Realty Opens First Barcelona Data Center, Strengthening Southern European Digital Hub
Digital Realty has officially launched its first data center in Barcelona, Spain, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion across the Iberian Peninsula. The new facility, designated BCN1, is located at Av. del Maresme, 43 in the Sant Adrià de Besòs innovation area, and was first announced in 2022 through the company's subsidiary, Interxion.
The data center offers 14MW of total planned capacity across 15,000 square meters (approximately 161,455 square feet), slightly down from the originally announced 15MW. The facility is designed to support high-density computing and is powered by HVO100 biodiesel for its backup generators, aligning with Digital Realty's sustainability commitments.
“Barcelona is emerging as a world-class digital gateway to the Mediterranean,” said Fabrice Coquio, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Europe Med at Digital Realty. “Digital Realty’s Barcelona Campus puts us right at the heart of that transformation, built to the highest sustainability standards. Together with our campuses in Madrid and Lisbon, we are proud to offer our customers a highly interconnected and environmentally responsible regional platform on the Iberian Peninsula.”
BCN1 will connect directly to Digital Realty's established southern European connectivity hub in Marseille, France, leveraging subsea cable systems such as 2Africa and Medusa, which currently land or are planned to land in the Catalonian city. This interconnection capability positions Barcelona as a strategic digital gateway for traffic between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Digital Realty already operates four data centers in Spain, all located in and around Madrid, with a fifth Madrid facility in development. The company is also building its first data center in neighboring Portugal—a 2.4MW facility in Lisbon expected to go live next year. The combined campuses in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon form a highly interconnected regional platform that strengthens the company's presence in Southern Europe and supports growing demand for cloud, AI, and enterprise workloads in the region.
