NextDC Launches First International Data Center Near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Australian data center operator NextDC has officially brought online its first international facility, KL1, located in Petaling Jaya, just west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The milestone marks a strategic expansion beyond Australia’s borders into Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing digital infrastructure market.

KL1 is situated at Seksyen 51a in Petaling Jaya and will deliver up to 65MW of total capacity upon full buildout. The facility is being developed in five phases, with the first phase offering 15MW. While the company has not disclosed the capacity currently live, the initial phase represents a significant step in scaling operations in the region. The data center also provides 18,250 square meters (196,441 square feet) of technical space.

NextDC has valued the total investment in KL1 at AUD$1 billion (approximately $716 million). The project is backed by the company’s broader financial strategy; last June, NextDC increased its debt financing to AUD$5.1 billion ($3.7 billion) to support ongoing data center expansion across multiple markets.

The launch of KL1 underscores NextDC’s ambition to establish a foothold in Southeast Asia, a region witnessing surging demand for cloud services and hyperscale computing. Beyond Kuala Lumpur, the company has sites in planning or under evaluation in Tokyo, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; and Johor, Malaysia. This expansion aligns with broader industry trends as global and regional players increasingly invest in digital infrastructure to meet the needs of enterprises and cloud providers.
