Scale42 Plans 60MW Data Center Campus in Liperi, Finland, as Part of Broader Nordic Expansion
Nordic data center developer Scale42 has announced plans to build a large-scale data center campus in the municipality of Liperi, western Finland, marking another step in its aggressive expansion across the Nordic region. The company, led by the founders of Fjord Power and Hydrokraft, is targeting a total of 1.3GW of capacity across seven planned sites in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland.
The Municipality of Liperi and Scale42 confirmed this week that they are negotiating the lease and sale of approximately nine hectares of land in the newly designated Välikangas industrial area for the development. The first phase of the project is expected to deliver 60MW of IT capacity, with construction potentially beginning as early as early 2027. The initial investment for this phase is estimated at around €800 million ($936.2 million).
William Tasney, CEO of Scale42, emphasized the strategic importance of the location. “The Välikangas industrial area is an exceptional location that strengthens our growing presence in Eastern Finland alongside our project in Kitee. From the outset, Liperi’s municipal leadership and local stakeholders have shown a strong commitment to enabling sustainable digital infrastructure and long-term regional growth,” he said. Liperi, a municipality near Joensuu in the North Karelia region, sits close to Finland’s western border, offering easy access to power lines and favorable construction conditions.
Pellervo Hämäläinen, Liperi’s municipal manager, highlighted the broader economic and environmental benefits. “The area is easy to build on and access, and it is located next to a power line. A data center is ideally suited to this industrial area, and the site also offers good conditions for the project’s possible expansion, including the distribution of waste heat, creating further opportunities for local businesses and projects. This is an economically significant project and precisely the kind of development project that was sought when zoning the new industrial area,” he noted.
Scale42’s broader portfolio in Finland includes a 60MW project in Kitee, about 75 kilometers southeast of Liperi, and a larger campus on the west coast near Kristinestad, which could eventually exceed 500MW. Beyond Finland, the company is planning a 400MW campus near Jokkmokk in northern Sweden, 100MW and 15MW facilities near Sørfold and Skibotn in Norway, respectively, and a 50MW project near Norðurþing in Iceland. These developments reflect the growing demand for sustainable, large-scale data center capacity in the Nordics, driven by the region’s abundant renewable energy, cool climate, and supportive local policies.
