Italian Telecom Firm Retelit Reportedly Weighs $830 Million Data Center Portfolio Sale

Retelit Considers Major Data Center Divestment Amid Strategic Review

January 26, 2026

Italian telecommunications and fiber infrastructure provider Retelit is exploring the potential sale of its data center portfolio in a deal that could be valued at approximately €700 million ($830 million), according to a report from Bloomberg. The move highlights the ongoing consolidation and strategic realignment within the European digital infrastructure sector, where specialized operators are attracting significant investor interest for their critical assets.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that Retelit is in the early stages of planning a sale, which could be finalized early next year. However, the sources stressed that no final decision has been made, and the process remains preliminary. When contacted by Bloomberg, Retelit stated it had not initiated a formal sale process for its data centers, emphasizing that these facilities remain a key part of its strategy. The company is continuing with a planned $439 million investment program to expand its data center capabilities.

Retelit's portfolio comprises 38 data centers strategically located across key Italian cities, including Milan, Rome, Naples, Genoa, and Bologna, as well as one facility in Innsbruck, Austria. The company, which owns and operates over 15,000 kilometers of fiber across Italy, has designed its facilities with a focus on performance, security, and scalability. Its infrastructure was bolstered last year by the acquisition of BT Italia's operations, which added an estimated 10 megawatts of power capacity to its national network.

The potential sale is being closely watched as a barometer for valuation trends in the European data center market. Retelit is owned by Asterion Industrial Partners, a private equity firm with a strong track record in digital infrastructure. Asterion acquired Retelit and took it private in 2021. The firm previously founded data center operator Nabiax through acquisitions from Telefónica, later divesting parts of that business. Asterion's recent activity, including the acquisition of a flagship data center from Altice Portugal in Covilhã, underscores its active role in shaping the region's infrastructure landscape. A successful sale of Retelit's portfolio would represent one of the larger single-asset transactions in the Italian market and could prompt further strategic moves by other regional players.
