According to Netskope research, during 2021, more than two-thirds of malware downloads came from cloud applications.
The research aims to uncover the continued growth of malware and other payloads resulting from cloud application delivery, as cloud-delivered malware has become more prevalent than network-delivered malware. The survey results show that in 2021, malware downloads from cloud applications will account for 66% of all malware downloads compared to traditional networks, up from 46% in early 2020.
Among them, Google Drive became the first choice for most malware downloads, while cloud malware distribution via Microsoft Office almost doubled from 2020 to 2021. As attackers continued to use Office documents to gain initial standing on target systems, malicious documents rose from 19% of all malware downloads in early 2020 to 37% by the end of 2021.
It can be seen that the research emphasizes that security incidents caused by cloud applications need more attention and strategies. In order to improve security solutions in 2022, Xintianyu Internet suggests that enterprises can take measures to lock cloud applications to help prevent attackers from infiltrating, while scanning incoming threats and outgoing data can also help reduce the risk of malware downloads and data breaches, as well as the security of the cloud infrastructure itself.
