Racks Central’s 510MW AI Data Center in Johor Reaches Construction Milestone

Singapore-based data center platform Racks Central has announced a key milestone in the construction of its 510MW AI data center campus in Johor, Malaysia, which the company claims is the first and largest AI-dedicated facility in Southeast Asia. The project, valued at RM26.6 billion (US$6.73 billion), is being built in phases, with Phase 1 on track to open in the first quarter of 2027.

Phase 1, which features Nvidia Blackwell GPU chips, has already reached the third floor of its three-storey structure in Pasir Gudang, according to Paul Mah, Executive Editor of w.media, who documented the progress in a LinkedIn post. The initial phase has a capacity of 70MW and is fully committed, while Phase 2, offering 120MW, is completely pre-booked, said Bobby Wee, CEO of Racks Central, during his opening speech at the site.

In an exclusive interview earlier this year, Wee revealed that the entire campus will deploy 100 percent high-end GPU offerings, with Nvidia Blackwell, Vera Rubin, and Rubin Ultra chips being installed across successive phases. The campus comprises four facilities: RCJM1, RCJM2A, RCJM2B, and RCJM3. The largest among them, RCJM2A and RCJM2B, together account for 300MW of the total 510MW capacity.

Water supply for the data center will be drawn from the Iskandar Reservoir, with treatment handled on-site. Racks Central has also signed an agreement with Johor Special Water (JSW) to supply water to RCJM1 and RCJM2A, ensuring that the facility’s water requirements are well covered, Wee noted.

The campus is designed to achieve GreenRE Platinum certification, a Malaysian standard developed by the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA). It incorporates advanced green features, including direct-to-chip cooling, and aligns with GreenRE’s own Data Centre rating tool, which adapts elements from global green-building certifications such as Singapore’s IMDA-BCA Green Mark.

To strengthen its leadership team, Racks Central recently appointed Suppan Saravanamuthu, formerly of Iron Mountain, as Chief Operating Officer. Founded in 2014 with a modest 12MW data center in Singapore, the company is now positioning itself as a major player in the region’s AI infrastructure market.
