50MW ‘Project Taurus’ Data Center Wins Approval in Colorado Springs
A 50MW data center development known as "Project Taurus" has secured planning approval from local authorities in Colorado Springs, Colorado, marking a significant expansion of the state’s data center footprint beyond the Denver metro area.
The Colorado Springs Planning Department approved a Development Plan Modification application for the project on June 11. The facility will occupy approximately 22 acres at 1565 High Tech Way and is being developed by Raeden, a data center operator with existing projects in Phoenix, Indianapolis, Detroit, Greensboro, and Miami.
Raeden plans to repurpose an existing 451,217-square-foot building on the site for the data center, while demolishing several smaller structures, including the central power supply, mechanical plant, and central utility building. The project has drawn controversy since its initial submission to the city in March, with members of a local Facebook group called "Stop Project Taurus Data Center - Garden of the Gods" discussing whether to appeal the government’s decision. Appeals must be filed by 5 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026.
The approval comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for data center development in Colorado. In May, the Denver City Council passed a one-year moratorium on new data centers within city limits, citing concerns over energy consumption and land use. Colorado Springs, located south of Denver, hosts a smaller but growing cluster of data centers, and Project Taurus could further shift development toward the region.
Industry observers note that the project underscores the ongoing demand for large-scale data center capacity in the U.S. interior, driven by cloud computing and AI workloads. Raeden’s ability to reuse an existing building also highlights a trend toward adaptive reuse in data center construction, which can reduce both costs and environmental impact.
