The rapid expansion of data centre infrastructure across Africa is reshaping the continent’s digital economy, with a new ranking of the top 10 operators highlighting the key players behind this transformation. As cloud adoption, mobile connectivity, and data sovereignty demands surge, these companies are positioning Africa as an emerging hub for hyperscale and colocation services.
The list, compiled by industry analysts, includes major operators such as Teraco Data Environments, Africa Data Centres, and Wingu, among others. These firms are collectively adding tens of megawatts of IT capacity across key markets including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco. Teraco, widely regarded as the largest carrier-neutral data centre provider on the continent, has expanded its facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town, while Africa Data Centres has broken ground on new facilities in Lagos and Nairobi to meet growing demand from hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
The scale of investment is significant. Industry estimates suggest that data centre capacity in Africa could exceed 1,000 megawatts by the end of the decade, up from roughly 400 megawatts in 2024. This growth is fueled by undersea cable landings, such as the Equiano and 2Africa cables, which have dramatically reduced latency and increased bandwidth availability. “The combination of improved connectivity and a young, tech-savvy population is making Africa one of the most exciting data centre markets in the world,” one industry executive noted in the report.
The implications for the broader African economy are profound. Local data centre expansion reduces reliance on offshore hosting, improving application performance for users while helping governments and enterprises meet data localization requirements. It also creates a ripple effect for ancillary industries, including renewable energy providers, as many operators commit to powering facilities with solar and wind to address grid reliability issues. As the market matures, these top 10 operators are not just building infrastructure—they are laying the digital foundation for Africa’s next wave of innovation.
