Karatzis Group Announces €240 Million, 430MW Data Center Campus in Central Greece March 6, 2026 In a significant move highlighting Greece's growing appeal as a digital infrastructure hub, the multinational Karatzis Group has unveiled plans to invest €240 million (approximately $278 million) in a major new data center campus in the Boeotia region. This investment marks a notable diversification for the Crete-based conglomerate, traditionally known for its plastic netting manufacturing and renewable energy ventures, into the strategic data center sector. The project, located in the Municipality of Orchomenos about 100 kilometers northwest of Athens, involves constructing seven data center buildings on a vast 342,465 square meter (3.68 million square foot) site near the PATHE motorway. At full buildout, the campus is designed to deliver a substantial 430 megawatts of total power capacity, with each facility contributing 61.49MW. Planning commenced in 2025 with site selection and environmental impact studies, and official documentation cited by Greek media indicates the chosen Ampelia site is outside of heritage and archaeologically sensitive zones. Construction of the massive complex is scheduled across three phases over 18 months. The first two eight-month stages will focus on foundational work, site preparation, and the erection of buildings and core infrastructure. A final two-month phase will be dedicated to installing electromechanical and IT equipment, followed by system integration and operational trials. Financing is expected to combine equity, bank loans, grants, and potential co-funding from European or national resources. The development underscores the accelerating data center investment in Greece, driven by rising demand for low-latency connectivity in the Mediterranean and broader European Union objectives around data sovereignty. It follows recent expansions by established operators like Digital Realty, which launched its largest Greek facility to date last year, and Microsoft's ongoing development in Attica. Karatzis Group's entry signals broadening interest in the nation's digital infrastructure potential, potentially catalyzing further regional growth. Source: datacenterdynamics
