In a significant move to enhance its operational resilience and digital capabilities, Mexico's leading financial institution, Grupo Financiero Banorte, has successfully completed a major data center migration in partnership with Hitachi Vantara. The project underscores a growing trend among financial entities to fortify critical infrastructure against regional risks and accelerate digital transformation initiatives.

The migration involved relocating Banorte's primary data center operations from a facility in Mexico City to a new site in Querétaro, a city with a burgeoning data center market hosting at least 18 facilities operated by firms like Kio Networks and Ascenty. The initiative, motivated by a desire to mitigate business risks associated with natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods prevalent in the Mexico City region, also included a comprehensive upgrade of the bank's mainframe storage environment. The technical execution was notable for its scale and speed, with the teams migrating approximately 450 terabytes of data in under one hour. The new infrastructure is supported by two mainframes and three interconnected Hitachi storage arrays, utilizing Hitachi Vantara Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) systems and Hitachi Universal Replicator (HUR) technologies.

Banorte has reported substantial performance improvements following the migration, including a 50 percent reduction in transaction response times. Delfin Ruiz, chief technology infrastructure officer at Banorte, stated, “Our strategic goal is to turn ordinary banking services into something extraordinary. Our digital capabilities are crucial to drive this strategy... We trust Hitachi’s technology and people to deliver for Banorte for years to come.” Adrian Johnson, chief revenue officer at Hitachi Vantara, added, “This successful migration showcases how our enterprise storage and services teams work in lockstep with customers to modernize critical infrastructure, reduce operational risk, and prepare for future innovation.”

The project holds broader implications for Mexico's financial and technology sectors, highlighting Querétaro's rising status as a strategic data hub. For Banorte, which operates over 1,200 branches and 7,300 ATMs, this infrastructure modernization is a foundational step towards enabling more personalized digital banking services and safeguarding operations for its extensive customer base. The migration also represents a critical step in moving past a 2019 data center outage that impacted the bank's services, positioning it for greater stability and future growth.
