Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT): The Scale of China’s Digital Economy Exceeds 45 Trillion Yuan

Recently, it was learned from the MIIT that in recent years, China digital economy has developed vigorously, and the industrial scale has continued to grow rapidly, ranking second in the world for several years. Statistics show that from 2012 to 2021, the scale of China digital economy will increase from 11 trillion yuan to over 45 trillion yuan, and the proportion of digital economy in GDP will increase from 21.6% to 39.8%.

The construction of new infrastructure has been accelerated, and digital industrialization has been further promoted. As of the end of May this year, China has built the world's largest and technologically advanced network infrastructure. All prefecture-level cities have fully built into optical network cities. The number of gigabit users has exceeded 50 million, the number of 5G base stations has reached 1.7 million, and the number of 5G mobile phone users are more than 420 million households. In 2021, the added value of the national electronic information manufacturing industry above designated size will increase by 15.7% over the previous year, and the growth rate will hit a new high in the past 10 years; the business income of software and information technology service industry, Internet and related service enterprises will maintain in high growth rate at 17.7% and 16.9% respectively.


Big data, cloud computing, and AI are rapidly integrated into industries such as industry, energy, medical care, transportation, education, and agriculture. As of the end of June this year, industrial Internet applications have covered 45 major categories of the national economy, and the high-quality external network of the industrial Internet has covered more than 300 cities. In 2021, the online retail sales of physical goods in China will exceed 10 trillion yuan for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 12.0%; the mobile payment business will reach 151.228 billion, a year-on-year increase of 22.73%.


It is understood that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, relevant departments will strengthen key technological breakthroughs in the digital economy, accelerate the promotion of digital industrialization, and facilitate high-quality economic and social development.
