Russia telecom will build its first data center in the Arctic Circle

Russian telecom operator Rostelecom has signed an agreement with the Murmansk regional government to build the operator's "first data center infrastructure" in the Arctic Circle.

It is reported that this planned facility on the Kola Peninsula will invest 300 million rubles (USD 4.27 million) and will be launched in 2022, and construction will start at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

The construction of the data center is intended for use by government departments and regional enterprises. Rostelecom will also hire local employees, and the operator will train these employees to serve in the hosting center.

Chibis, Governor of Murmansk Region, said: "In the field of digitalization, we have achieved very important results in the past two years. First, the Murmansk region has become the second most digitized region in the Northwest. Second, we have become the main destination for providing important digital social services. “

"Data centers will help store and process information. The second very important point is that the center is necessary for our companies, which are now very actively involved in reducing costs, improving labor efficiency and productivity. ”

The Murmansk data center plan was announced only a few weeks after Rostelecom opened another data center infrastructure in the capital Moscow.

Rostelecom's data center product portfolio currently includes six facilities with a total of 3,764 racks.
