Amazon Wins Environmental Legal Battle to Expand Data Center in Santiago, Chile
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has secured the green light to proceed with a major data center expansion on the northern outskirts of Santiago, Chile, after environmental regulators rejected a legal challenge from local residents. The ruling marks a significant victory for the tech giant’s cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure ambitions in Latin America.
Opponents of the project had argued that the facility’s environmental permit failed to account for a high-voltage power line they claimed would be necessary to supply the site. In April, environmental authorities ruled that the data center could move forward, stating that any future power line proposal would require a separate and independent environmental assessment. AWS confirmed that the facility meets all environmental requirements and will deploy technologies designed to minimize both energy and water consumption.
The project is a cornerstone of AWS’s broader expansion strategy in Chile, where the company has pledged to invest more than $4 billion over 15 years to build and operate cloud infrastructure. Chilean President José Antonio Kast has publicly supported faster approval processes for data centers, promising to reduce bureaucratic red tape to attract further investment.
