Prime Data Centers Breaks Ground on 18MW Facility in Sacramento, California

Prime Data Centers has broken ground on a new data center in Sacramento, California, marking the latest expansion of its campus in the McClellan Business Park. The facility, designated SMF02, is the second building on the site and responds to growing demand for high-performance computing and AI workloads in the region.

The 150,000-square-foot, two-story multi-tenant building will deliver 18MW of critical IT load capacity. Located at 2408 AK Street, adjacent to Prime’s existing SMF01 facility, the new data center is designed to support customers deploying AI and high-performance computing workloads at scale. “Sacramento has proven itself as a strategic growth market, and SMF02 is a direct response to the demand we are seeing from customers deploying AI and high-performance computing workloads at scale,” said Michael Hildebrand, SVP of Product Delivery at Prime Data Centers. “With SMF01 operational and SMF02 now underway, our Sacramento campus gives customers a long-term home for mission-critical infrastructure in one of California’s most important technology regions.”

The facility will be powered by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) and will feature a closed-loop cooling system designed to reduce water consumption. Prime has selected Clune Construction as the general contractor for the project. “We are proud to once again partner with Prime Data Centers on this innovative project. Our relationship reflects the trust we’ve built together on a national level. Construction will support approximately 250 on-site workers at peak, with additional economic activity generated through local subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers,” said Errol Lolin, SVP and general manager at Clune Construction Company.

Prime’s Sacramento campus spans 8.6 acres and totals 26MW across 215,000 square feet. The original facility, SMF01, launched in 2020, and plans for the second building were announced in 2021, with the company filing for development last year. Beyond Sacramento, Prime Data Centers has 7GW of operational and planned capacity across the United States and Europe, with locations including Chicago, Phoenix, Austin, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Frankfurt, Berlin, Helsinki, Esbjerg, and Madrid. Investors in the company include Macquarie Capital, Ares Management, Siemens Financial Services, Snowhawk, Nuveen, and Grain.
