Stockland Seeks Permit for 250MW Data Center Campus in Melbourne
Australian real estate giant Stockland has taken a major step toward expanding its digital infrastructure footprint, filing for a planning permit to develop a 250MW data center campus in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The move underscores the growing demand for large-scale data center capacity in Australia, driven by cloud adoption and artificial intelligence workloads.
According to Victoria’s planning register, Stockland submitted the application earlier this week for a site at 72-76 Cherry Lane in Laverton. The proposed campus will feature two two-story data center buildings, though full technical details have not yet been disclosed. The property currently houses a warehouse facility spanning approximately 20,000 square meters (215,278 square feet).
The Cherry Lane site was previously owned by logistics firm Toll Transport, which sold it to Stockland in 2025 for AU$35.5 million (US$24.5 million). Founded in 1952 and headquartered in Sydney, Stockland is one of Australia’s largest property groups, with a portfolio valued at AU$10.6 billion (US$6.6 billion) and a development pipeline worth AU$59 billion (US$41.6 billion). Its investments span town centers, logistics hubs, workplaces, and master-planned communities.
Stockland has been actively building its data center pipeline across Australia. The company has already partnered with EdgeConneX for a development in Sydney’s Macquarie Park area and previously filed plans for a 168MW facility in the Kemps Creek area of Sydney. Another project is targeted at 2 Davis Road in Wetherill Park, currently home to a distribution center.
In its most recent earnings report, Stockland confirmed that three of its data center projects—located in Wetherill Park, Kemps Creek, and Macquarie Park—have been included in the New South Wales Government’s Investment Delivery Authority (IDA) fast-track approval process. The company also holds three existing sites with secured power totaling 450MW. In February, Stockland announced it had secured power for approximately 350MW of data center development in Melbourne, including the Cherry Lane site in Laverton and the Brooklyn Distribution Centre.
The Cherry Lane campus represents a significant addition to Melbourne’s data center market, which is experiencing robust growth as hyperscale cloud providers and enterprises seek localized capacity. Stockland’s ability to leverage its extensive land holdings and development expertise positions it as a key player in Australia’s data center landscape.
