Google Breaks Ground on $15 Billion AI and Data Center Hub in Visakhapatnam, India
Google has officially begun construction on a major artificial intelligence and data center hub in Visakhapatnam, India, marking the launch of a $15 billion investment program that is expected to reshape the country’s digital infrastructure over the next five years. The project represents one of the largest single commitments to AI infrastructure in the region and signals a deepening partnership between the tech giant and the Indian government.
The development, carried out in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel, will anchor what Google describes as India’s first gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem. The hub includes three hyperscale data center campuses, expanded fiber connectivity, subsea cable infrastructure, and long-term renewable energy integration. These facilities are designed to support high-performance AI workloads and low-latency cloud services for enterprises, developers, and research organizations across the country.
Google first announced the investment in October 2025 as part of a broader push to expand AI-ready infrastructure in India. The company plans to invest $15 billion between 2026 and 2030 to support cloud expansion, digital connectivity, and services. The Visakhapatnam hub is the centerpiece of this strategy, with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel building the facilities and supporting infrastructure while Google deploys the computing systems and AI platforms.
Indian IT Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the project, stating that the groundbreaking reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a global leader in technology. He emphasized that the AI hub and three subsea cables landing in Visakhapatnam will become critical infrastructure for the country’s future growth. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu added that the hub will be a cornerstone of the state’s growing tech corridor, driving innovation and creating high-value opportunities for local youth. He noted that the partnership with Google goes beyond attracting investment, aiming to make local talent, startups, and enterprises active participants in the technology-driven growth story.
The project also includes the America-India Connect initiative, which seeks to expand fiber-optic connectivity and strengthen international data routes linking India with global digital networks. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the groundbreaking as a powerful realization of a shared vision with the Indian government and an inflection point for the country’s AI-native future. He said the hub will serve as a catalyst for growth built on deep community partnerships.
In line with India’s target of reaching 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, Google said the facilities will rely on a long-term clean energy strategy. Beyond infrastructure, the company announced workforce and community programs tied to the project, including plans to train local workers in construction, facility operations, cloud computing, and generative AI through partnerships with ICT Academy and other organizations.
