Taewang D&D Builds Bomb Shelter-Level AI Data Center in South Korea

As data centers become increasingly targeted in global conflicts, one South Korean firm is building an AI data center designed to withstand military-grade attacks. Taewang D&D, a subsidiary of Daegu-based construction company Taewang E&C, announced on May 5 that it is constructing the Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center in Gyeongnam Province using super concrete technology, aiming to ensure uninterrupted operations even during war or terrorist strikes.

The facility will be built entirely with K-UHPC (ultra-high performance concrete), a material developed with technology transferred from the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT). The company said the super concrete offers up to six times stronger protective capabilities than general concrete, and will be used for both the exterior walls and internal columns to guard against drone and terrorist attacks. Chairman Noh Ki-won of Taewang E&C stated that the Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center, described as the world’s first with protective functions, “will become a global standard beyond South Korea.”

The decision to prioritize physical security comes amid a rising trend of direct attacks on data center infrastructure. On March 1 of last year, two AWS (Amazon Web Services) data centers in the United Arab Emirates were hit by drone strikes, and a facility in Bahrain was also damaged around the same time. While U.S. big tech data centers had previously faced only cyber threats during regional conflicts, these incidents marked the first known physical military attacks, causing widespread disruptions to local banks, delivery services, and telecom networks.

Alongside its focus on structural resilience, Taewang D&D has partnered with STLogic, the only domestic company with fourth-generation GPU-based database management system (DBMS) technology. This collaboration aims to digitally transform the vast amount of manufacturing data from the Gyeongnam region in real time, enabling local manufacturers to develop independent physical AI solutions using high-performance GPU-based AI infrastructure.

The Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center is being built on a 49,682-square-meter site within the Sacheon IC complex distribution and commercial district. Taewang D&D signed an investment agreement with Sacheon City in April of last year to develop an ultra-large-scale AI data center with a capacity of 800MW, and has applied for a power grid impact assessment to add a second phase of 120MW in the future.
