Amazon Partners with Veolia to Deploy Water-Reuse Technology at Mississippi Data Centers
Amazon has entered into a strategic partnership with French utility company Veolia to reduce water consumption at its data centers in Mississippi, marking a significant step in the tech giant’s push toward sustainable infrastructure. The collaboration focuses on deploying advanced water-reuse technology, with the first facility expected to become operational in 2027.
Under the agreement, Veolia will provide autonomous containerized treatment systems that convert effluent from nearby wastewater treatment plants and other available sources into high-quality cooling water suitable for industrial data center operations. Once fully operational, the project is projected to reuse more than 83 million gallons of potable water annually, underscoring the scale of the initiative.
The modular design of Veolia’s solution allows for scalable deployment and repeatability across Amazon’s global portfolio of data centers. This project is part of Veolia’s Data Center Resource 360 program, which was formally launched last month to address the growing resource demands of the data center industry.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Amazon to secure its water needs in Mississippi while protecting the local community's resources — this is environmental security in action,” said Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia. “By combining Veolia’s water expertise with Amazon’s AI technologies, we’re transforming data centers into engines of innovation for sustainability.”
Beyond wastewater treatment, Amazon Web Services will support Veolia in developing AI-enhanced solutions for water treatment. These capabilities include real-time process optimization, predictive maintenance, and operational intelligence aimed at maximizing efficiency and reducing resource consumption across Veolia’s global network.
“Through our collaborative work on AI applied to water treatment, Veolia will be able to further drive innovation and enhance the efficiency of on-site teams — thanks to automated analytics, actionable recommendations, optimized inventory management, and streamlined maintenance,” said Will Hewes, Amazon’s global water stewardship lead. “We’re pleased to join forces with Veolia to advance more sustainable water use strategies while helping it pioneer more efficient water treatment solutions for customers worldwide.”
This partnership is part of a broader trend in the data center industry to address water scarcity and environmental impact. Amazon has recently taken several steps to bolster water sustainability, including forming the Water-AI Nexus Center of Excellence with various stakeholders, which focuses on developing sustainable water practices for AI infrastructure. Last June, the company also announced plans to expand the number of its data center locations using treated wastewater for cooling from 20 to 120.
