Google Launches $15 Billion AI Data Centre in Visakhapatnam, Marking India’s Largest Hyperscale Project
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is set to officially inaugurate the construction of a $15 billion AI data centre in Visakhapatnam on April 28, a project that underscores the growing strategic importance of India in the global AI infrastructure race. The hyperscale facility, which will be developed by Google, is expected to transform Visakhapatnam into a major technology hub in Asia and represents one of the largest single investments in digital infrastructure in the country.
Spanning nearly 600 acres across the villages of Tarluvada, Adavivaram, and Rambilli, the data centre will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, making it one of the largest AI data establishments in India. The facility is designed to support advanced AI cloud infrastructure and large-scale data storage, catering to the surging demand for compute power driven by generative AI and enterprise digital transformation. The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities in fields such as AI operations, cloud management, and cybersecurity, while also spurring industrial growth in the surrounding region.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision, which aims to position the country as a global leader in technology and innovation. By anchoring a hyperscale AI data centre in Visakhapatnam, Google is betting on the city’s potential to emerge as a competitive alternative to established tech hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The development is also expected to attract ancillary industries, including renewable energy providers and network infrastructure firms, further strengthening the local economy.
Industry analysts view the project as a pivotal moment for India’s data centre sector, which has seen a surge in investment from global hyperscalers in recent years. With AI workloads demanding ever greater computational capacity, facilities like the Visakhapatnam data centre will play a critical role in enabling India’s digital ecosystem to scale. The project also highlights the increasing collaboration between state governments and global technology companies to build world-class digital infrastructure outside of traditional metropolitan areas.
