Adani Begins Construction of Google's $15 Billion AI Data Center Hub in India, Adding New Subsea Cable Gateway

The Adani Group is set to begin construction on Google's $15 billion AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam on April 28, marking a significant milestone in India's digital infrastructure expansion. The project will not only establish a massive computing facility but also add a new subsea cable gateway for the country, complementing existing landings in Mumbai and Chennai. Telecom operator Airtel is also involved in the project, providing connectivity support.

The new gateway will connect to Google's existing network of more than two million miles of terrestrial and subsea cables, positioning Visakhapatnam as a major AI and connectivity hub that serves both India and global markets. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated 600 acres of land across three locations—Tarluvada near Anandapuram, Mudasarlova in Visakhapatnam, and Rambilli in Anakapalle—for the 1 GW data center hub. The investments are expected to be deployed over a five-year period beginning in 2026.

Upon completion, the new gateway is expected to help India meet surging digital demands and expand existing capacity. The AI data center hub will feature AI infrastructure, data center capacity, large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network. The Union government anticipates the hub will support the growing demand for AI-based digital services across various sectors, while the Andhra Pradesh government views this marquee investment as a catalyst to attract other global multinational companies to its coastal cities, which are being positioned as a technology hub.

Google expects that the new data center location will expand its capacity and provide users with better, faster access to its services. Under the partnership, Google provides the technology, while the Adani Group handles construction and data center operations, and Nxtra by Airtel manages the connectivity aspect.
